Abuja became Nigeria's capital city in 1970, replacing the previous capital of Lagos. Officials decided to move the capital from Lagos, to Abuja, which because of its location, symbolized neutrality and national unity. Construction broke ground in the late 1970's, and Abuja was officially declared Nigeria's capital on December 12, 1991.

The GHAIN Project is currently headquartered in Abuja.
